📚 Norfolk Public Schools – Attendance Counts!

The cornerstone of a proudly diverse community

1️⃣ DID YOU KNOW?

Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

➡️ Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves.
➡️ Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important.
➡️ Eventually, good attendance will be a skill that helps them succeed in high school and college.

📉 Missing 10% of school (1 or 2 days every few weeks) can make it harder to:

  • Gain early reading and math skills

  • Build relationships

  • Develop good attendance

2️⃣ DID YOU KNOW?

🎓 Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation.

3️⃣ DID YOU KNOW?

Make school attendance a priority!

  • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day

  • Help your child maintain daily routines

  • Try not to schedule appointments during the school day

Schedule medical appointments:

  • Before school (if on a late stagger)

  • After school ends

  • During the afternoon on early release days

  • On holidays (if possible)

  • On teacher workdays

  • During scheduled school breaks

4️⃣ When do absences become a problem?

🚦Chronic Absence: 18 or more days
⚠️ Warning Signs: 10 to 17 days
✅ Satisfactory: 9 or fewer absences

💡 Help Your Students Stay Engaged!

  • Find out if your child feels engaged in class and safe from bullying and other threats

  • Make sure your child is not missing class due to behavioral or academic challenges

  • Monitor academic progress and get help from teachers or counselors

  • Stay connected with your child’s social contacts

  • Encourage your child to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs
